Lord give us politicians with the wisdom of Will Rogers
William Penn Adair "Will" Rogers was born in 1879 in Oologah, Oklahoma. He had that humble, common man attitude that most Americans identified with during his lifetime. Fame and fortune did not affect Will as it does most people. His humility, sharp mind and broad talent made him successful in a wide variety of fields. He became a stage and motion picture actor, vaudeville performer, American cowboy, humorist, newspaper columnist, and social commentator. Will's family identified as of mixed race Cherokee Indian. Will Rogers was killed in Alaska when his friend Wiley Post's plane crashed there in 1935. I was about five when that happened and remember everyone talking about the tragedy. He was the most famous person in America at the time and was universally loved for his humility and quick wit. Everyone in America felt they knew Will personally and the burdens of the Great Depression were relieved for them by his quotes. If his name is not known to you, it will be after you read the wit and humor in his quotes below...
Diplomacy is the art of saying 'Nice doggie' until you can find a rock.
Don't gamble; take all your savings and buy some good stock and hold it till it goes up, then sell it. If it don't go up, don't buy it.
Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there.
I never expected to see the day when girls would get sunburned in the places they do today.
I'm not a real movie star. I've still got the same wife I started out with twenty-eight years ago.
