Common Sense Commentary: In this study of Hebrews 5:11 thru 6:6, the Greek word "arche" translated here "first principles" and "principles" means "beginner foundational level" doctrines (major subjects) in God's Word, the Holy Bible. The word "perfection" here is the Greek word "teleiotes" and means "spiritually mature". I will give the verses in red and my paraphrasing explanation in black.
Heb.5:11 "Of whom we have many things to say and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing." We have a lot of things to teach you about Christ and God the Father but you have such short attention spans you are like baby Christians.
5:12-13 "For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you AGAIN... the first principles of the oracles of God; and are ... such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe." Considering how long you have been saved, you should by now be already teaching God's Word to others but we have to keep coming back and reteaching you the first grade level
abc's and 1-2-3's of exactly who Jesus is and how He died for our sins. This, to reassure you of your salvation and eternal security in Christ. By now you should be off of milk and learning the "strong meat" things of God's Word. But, no, you are still on the baby bottle and pablum basics. Grow up people.
5:14 "But strong meat belongeth to them that are of FULL AGE , even those who by reason of USE have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil." You need to get off the bottle, grow up, and eat your meat and vegetables doctrine. Exercise your mind, strengthen your heart, study, pray and witness to your friends. Otherwise, you will be stunted and never will mature into grown-up disciples of Christ and be able to discern between right and wrong, good and evil as God intends for you to do. Grow up people!
Heb.6:1 "THEREFORE leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying AGAIN the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God ...." THEREFORE let us "LEAVE" the beginner lessons of 1+1=2 and 2-1=1 and learn big boy math, like, "one minus Christ = Hell" and three in one = Holy Trinity and "eternity" means FOREVER" and "everlasting" means "lasting FOREVER". Let us go on to maturity in Christ not laying again and again and again the "foundational" things of salvation like "repentance from dead works and faith toward God" to reassure you of your salvation.
6:2 "Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgement." Let's move up to the doctrine of baptisms (plural). There is a spiritual baptism (in-filling immersion) with the Holy Spirit of God when we are truly saved. Reference Rom.8:9 "Now if any man Have Not the SPIRIT OF CHRIST, he is none of HIS." After that "spiritual" immersion in the Holy Spirit, Christ commands us to follow His example of "physical", water baptism as a visible testimony, to the world, of our personal acceptance of the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord Jesus. Let us study and learn the "strong meat" deeper doctrines of "laying on of hands" in prayer and commitment and of the "resurrection of the dead" at the Second Coming of Christ (Rev.20:6), and things like the certainty of "eternal judgement" .... Christians at the Judgement Seat of Christ; But the lost at the Great White Throne Judgement of God at the "second resurrection" where all the lost shall be "judged according to their works." Rev.20:13.
6:3 "And this we will do, if God permit." And this we will do, if God permits us the grace and strength and you the grace to listen, learn and grow up to mature Christians resting your eternal souls by faith in Christ to keep you saved for eternity. Only then will you cease to doubt and fear losing it. Reference Jude1:24 "Now unto Him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of HIS glory with exceeding joy."
6:4 "For it is IMPOSSIBLE for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were MADE PARTAKERS of the HOLY GHOST, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, IF they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put Him to an open shame." Fear God but stop fearing the loss of your eternal, everlasting salvation which is in His hands not yours. "For it is impossible for those who were ONCE enlightened, and HAVE tasted of the heavenly gift (forgiveness of sin and eternal life through Christ) and were MADE Partakers
of the Holy ghost, and have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, IF it were possible for them to "fall away", to renew them AGAIN unto repentance; seeing they (would have to) crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and (therefore) put him to an open shame" Reference 2Cor.5:21 "For he (God) made Him (Jesus) to be sin for us, Him who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him." For us to be saved again ... would require Jesus to be made sin for us again, die for us again and resurrect from the dead AGAIN. That would put Him to an open shame and the whole idea is "impossible". If you still believe you can lose it you must also believe you could never be saved again.
Pass it on. RB
