Is it in our personal goodness or worthiness? That cannot be, for we have neither, in the eyes of God. Is it in our talents or skills? They are too small for even heaven to see. Is it in our superior intelligence? My intelligence has failed me thousands of times. Or is it in our heritage, our blood, our strength or beauty? All these are less than nothing with God in meriting his love. We, therefore, are totally without merit or value to God... except for one thing, which God Himself is responsible for. That one thing we have of value to him is his implantation unto us of His own image and likeness when He created man, in Genesis. You and I were created by the God of the universe, who also created the universe itself. But, upon us, He stamped His own image and likeness, to be His children, His family, the "apple of His eye".
"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved." Eph.1:3-6.
That is why He loves us and even bought us back to Himself when we were lost to Him because of sin. Our value to him is proven not only by His creation of us, but by His provision of our redemption from sin. He loves us and values us and wants us back. When we acknowledge our sinful worthlessness, repent, and rest our trust in His redemption (to buy back) through faith Christ, He restores us as His born again Children. Our value to God can only be measured by His image and likeness upon us, and the price He paid to buy us back ... Jesus Christ on the cross.
"So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them." Gen.1:27.
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16.
